5 Things We Forget When Spring Cleaning.
Although it may not be something we all enjoy, we know that as spring comes around, it’s time to take a look at the house and give it a good deep clean. We look to clear out cluttered cupboards, freshen up filthy floors and even scrub spotted showers. But there are items that we forget about each spring that, if we spend a bit more time on, can make all the difference when we sit back down after a busy weekend of cleaning.
1. Dishwasher
“What do you mean my dishwasher has a filter?” That is the response most people give when they are told to empty the filter. Emptying the dishwasher filter not only ensures that every cycle will produce dishes clean enough to eat off, but will help get rid of the nasty dishwasher smell that can build up and make you regret opening the blasted thing. Giving the hidden crevices, such as those around the spinning arm and the rack slide, a deep clean can help get rid of the grime that causes dishes to come out dirty. Cleaners need cleaning too sometimes, and to make sure you are getting the most out of every wash, cleaning the dishwasher is a must.
2. Air Filters and Ducts
A clean air filter is the key to keeping the air in your home clean, fresh and healthy for you and your family. Your reusable filters should be cleaned every month, and disposable filters changed every three months. Make sure you also get your air ducts checked once or twice a year for a build-up of debris, mould or even pests. If any of these are present, you may want to schedule a professional clean.
3. Refrigerator Coils
Cleaning the coils underneath your refrigerator is something most people either ignore, or simply aren’t aware is a necessity. If left unchecked, they can become caked with dust and grime which will significantly diminish the efficiency of your fridge. This can lead to a higher power draw, which results in more money being sucked out of your pocket. Make sure this space is vacuumed every couple of months to lower your electricity bills, and in turn your stress levels.
4. Washing Machine & Dryer
Similar to the dishwasher, your washing machine and dryer need some TLC every now and again. Grease and grime can build up in the drum of your washing machine, especially if you have someone in your home that spends a lot of time outdoors. Giving your washing machine a good scrub to remove grime and cleaning the washing machine’s filter is a must for every spring clean. So too with your dryer. We all know we need to clear the lint screens, but the screens themselves sometimes require a clean too! Washing the screen with warm, soapy water will help your dryer operate more efficiently, and reduce the risk of fire.
5. Rug and Upholstery Cleaning
We all know the floors are one of the most important things to clean each spring clean. But what about the things that sit on top of them – rugs, couches and reading chairs? All of these require a good, deep clean to get the best out of them. A stained rug upon sparkling tiles is not a good look. Nor is a grimy armchair that anyone wants to sit in. Giving each of these items a deeper clean is vital for a fresh feeling living room.
